South Orange and Maplewood
These two side-by-side towns about twenty minutes south of Montclair share a school district and a train line, but differ in size and tone. Maplewood is small with a quaint downtown area, which, in recent years has attracted many New Yorkers who love the seven-day-a-week direct commute to Penn Station. South Orange offers a larger downtown area with lots of good restaurants and a new performing arts center. Both towns are diverse and known for attracting jazz musicians, writers, and artists who find the area a more affordable alternative to Montclair.  

Millburn/Short Hills
Here you’ll find some of the very best ranked schools in New Jersey, and some of the largest most exclusive homes as well. Rolling hills, curving roads, large lots, and many cul de sacs create a more private feeling than you find in most of Essex County. Many homes here are split levels, built after World War II, or if you prefer, there is brand new construction available, as well. For shopping there is the upscale Short Hills Mall, or if you prefer small local merchants, Millburn offers a strong downtown area. An excellent direct train line to New York departs from two stations.
